How is 2021 going for you? I can’t believe autumn is here! I have been on a delightful and meaningful journey with my family lately, as you might have read in my last letter. Today I would like to share with you the steps on how to clarify and discover your values as a family or a team in the workplace. But first, I would like to explain WHY I have done this with my family and the importance of values to us as creatives.
We all have values and values are instilled in us from the environment we’ve grown up in or what we’ve established within ourselves as we become who we are today. So when it comes to families, most of us aim to raise our kids according to our values, because it is what makes us who we are. And it should be no different in the workplace. Our collective purpose, beliefs and values create the culture of a family, team and community. It is through this we remain connected with those who have the same purpose, beliefs and values. This is how our cultural legacy lives on.
The truth is, whether we are intentional about our beliefs and values or not, we are still creating culture because culture is essentially the way we behave as a group of people. Therefore, I wanted to do this as a family so we can be intentional about creating the kind of family culture that we want to live out right now and leave a legacy of our values to the future generation.
As creatives, I feel that it is important for us to bring values to the front and centre of our lives because it becomes the thing that makes the world a better place. How then does this link to the art we create? When we create art, we create from our perception and perspective, and what we perceive is shaped by our experiences and our values.
When we are aware of our beliefs and values, it gives us a foundation to create from. The substance and worth of our art isn’t only found in the skilful use of a particular medium, but it is found in its message, inspiration and value from which the concept is formed right through to production.
The process of clarifying our values isn’t difficult, and can sometimes feel too obvious to even mention. But when it comes to raising a family, leading a team or being part of one, I have found that we need reminding…. almost every day. This will help us establish our anchor points as we face any circumstance, set our seasonal priorities and have a clearer idea of what we need to focus on.
I have written steps on how you too can clarify your values as a family or team. All you have to do is download the PDF from the link below.
I hope this process will be effective and memorable for you as it did for me. I cannot be happier to have done this with my family and we have been making positive changes ever since. Let me know how you go - I would love to hear from you.
